Sun-Kissed Summer: How We Celebrated the Last Day of School

The Last Day of School Deserves a Real Celebration
The last day of school arrives every year with this particular energy — backpacks lighter, calendars suddenly wide open, summer stretching out ahead like something you almost can't believe is really here.
This year, we celebrated it properly.
Sun-Kissed Summer was a co-hosted pool party built around a lemon theme, a signature drink, and the kind of details that make a gathering feel like a real occasion. My daughter and her friend co-hosted alongside their moms — and everything from the garland to the favor bags carried the same warm, sunny feeling all the way through.

The Concept: Lemon Everything
Lemon is one of those themes that works effortlessly in summer. It's cheerful without being loud. It has a natural color palette — yellow, white, blue — that feels clean and cohesive without a lot of effort. And it translates beautifully across paper goods, food, drinks, and décor.
Sun-Kissed Summer leaned into that palette fully. Every element — from the party sign to the dot cakes to the Pink Lemonade Sangria — carried the same thread. Cohesive, intentional, and completely achievable.
The Party Sign
Every party needs something that sets the tone the moment guests arrive. For Sun-Kissed Summer, that was the party sign.
I used a sandwich chalkboard as the base, laid down light yellow wrapping paper — using the grid lines on the back to measure — then taped a printed Sun-Kissed Summer sign directly onto it. A lemon garland draped across the top finished the look. Simple, intentional, and immediately on theme.
This is a setup that takes maybe fifteen minutes and makes the party feel like it was planned with care — because it was.
The Garland
Garland is one of my favorite details to build — and Sun-Kissed Summer's garland might be one of my favorites yet.
I started with a felt lemon garland from My Mind's Eye, then built out the ribbon bundle with pieces from Michael's: a lemon-print ribbon, a yellow and white stripe ribbon, and a blue and white gingham ribbon that tied the whole palette together into a bow. Two Last Day of School felt flags from Target added the seasonal moment.
Everything was held up on the table using purse stands — no hanging, no nails, no fuss. The purse stands are one of my non-negotiable party staples and they made this setup entirely self-contained.
The Paper Goods
Paper goods are one of the most efficient ways to make a theme feel cohesive — and Sun-Kissed Summer's table proved it.
I used the My Mind's Eye lemon collection as the anchor: lemon-printed plates paired with blue striped dinner plates and napkins for a layered, intentional look. Dollar Tree lemon plates filled in the rest. Together they looked like a fully coordinated table that cost a fraction of what people might assume.
The lesson: a strong anchor collection plus one budget find goes a long way.
The Dot Cakes
Heart-shaped dot cakes in yellow and white nonpareils to match the Sun-Kissed Summer palette.
The dot cake has become one of my favorite party desserts — not just because it's beautiful, but because of the sound. Running a spoon across the surface of a dot cake is genuinely one of the most satisfying things I have filmed. If you haven't heard it yet, go watch the video. You'll understand immediately.
These were the detail that stopped everyone in their tracks.
The Signature Drink: Pink Lemonade Sangria
Every party needs a signature drink. For Sun-Kissed Summer, it was Pink Lemonade Sangria — non-alcoholic, beautiful, and built for a crowd.
Strawberry slices. Lemon slices. Frozen pineapple chunks. Fresh mint.
I made two versions: large dispensers for the main table, with pre-prepped gallon zip-lock bags of fruit ready to dump in for easy assembly, and individual drink buckets with a lemonade sticker and their own zip-lock bags of fresh ingredients built when guests arrived.
Two formats, one drink, total crowd pleaser. This is staying in the Confetti Spot rotation.
The Push Pop Trifle (and What I Learned)
Lemon strawberry push pop trifle: angel food cake, lemon pudding, strawberries, cool whip, and lemon candy on top. The idea was stunning. The execution taught me something.
Angel food cake is far too spongy to cut into circles for a push pop — it loses its shape completely. I ended up cubing it instead and hoping the layers would still show. They didn't quite look as planned. But they tasted absolutely incredible.
If I made these again: vanilla cake instead of angel food, or skip the push pop format entirely and serve them in mini cups where the layers can really show. Messy, not perfect. Still worth every second.
The Food Setup
A summer pool party calls for summer food — and this spread delivered.
Hot dogs. Burgers. Corn on the cob. Salad. Chips and dip. Candy. Watermelon. Pink Lemonade Sangria running through it all as the thread that tied the theme to the table. Everything was styled with the lemon palette in the background — garland, paper goods, and the lemon pool floats visible through the window.
Food that feels like summer and looks like part of the party. That's always the goal.
The Party Favor: Mini Canvas Totes

Something they could use the moment they walked out the door. The tote is the favor — and everything inside it extends the Sun-Kissed Summer feeling past the day. That's the kind of favor worth making.
The Little Details That Made It Feel Like Summer
Lemon pool floats. Bubbles drifting across the backyard. The afternoon light on the water. These are the moments that don't need explanation — they just need to be captured.
A basket of bubbles near the pool. Floats waiting on the surface. The kind of afternoon that reminds you exactly why summer is worth celebrating.
On Co-Hosting
Sun-Kissed Summer was co-hosted — and that made it both easier and different than hosting at home.
The upside: shared planning, shared energy, and two people who love to throw a good party doing it together. The challenge: when you're not in your own space, there is no running back to the closet for something you forgot. Everything has to be thought through in advance.

What Worked
The lemon theme traveled beautifully across every element — sign, garland, paper goods, food, drink, and favors all felt connected without feeling forced.
The Pink Lemonade Sangria was the star. The dispensers looked stunning on the table and the individual bucket cups gave guests their own beautiful moment. Make this drink. It is worth it.
The dot cakes. Always the dot cakes. That sound. That detail. That reaction. Non-negotiable for any summer party.
Co-hosting with the right person made this feel lighter and more fun than hosting alone. Having a partner who is easy-going and knows how to throw a party changes everything.
What I'd do differently: vanilla cake in the push pop trifles, or switch to mini cups entirely. Angel food cake and push pop molds are not friends.
Make This Night Yours
You don't need a pool or a lemon theme or a co-host to celebrate the last day of school. You need a reason to mark the moment — and the intention to do it.
